Portugal Votes: Presidential Election Likely Heading to Runoff for First Time Since 1986

Portugal appears to be on the verge of a political earthquake. Exit polls from Sunday’s presidential election suggest that no candidate has secured the 50% necessary to win in the first round, forcing the country into a runoff for the first time in four decades.

The election has become a referendum on the country’s direction, dominated by a severe housing crisis, stagnant wages, and the broader European trend of rising right-wing populism.

A split image showing the two leading candidates. On the left, the moderate incumbent (or establishment candidate) looks tired, waving to a small crowd. On the right, the charismatic leader of the far-right ‘Chega’ party is shouting into a microphone at a massive, energetic rally filled with Portuguese flags. A graphic overlay shows a bar chart with both candidates neck-and-neck at around 30%.

The Rise of the Right

While the Presidency in Portugal is largely ceremonial, the surge of the far-right Chega party’s candidate, who is currently polling at a shock 28%, signals a deep dissatisfaction with the mainstream Socialist and Social Democratic parties that have rotated power since the Carnation Revolution.

“I cannot afford to rent an apartment in the city where I was born,” says Miguel, a 32-year-old graphic designer in Lisbon. “Digital nomads and tourists have taken over. The government does nothing. Maybe we need a shock to the system.”

Europe Watches Closely

Brussels is watching with anxiety. Portugal has long been considered an immune bastion against the far-right wave sweeping Italy, the Netherlands, and Germany. A victory for the populists in the runoff, scheduled for February, would shatter that image and complicate EU unity on issues ranging from migration to Ukraine aid.

The runoff campaign, set to begin Monday, is expected to be brutal, with the establishment parties likely forming a “cordon sanitaire” to block the far-right path to the Palácio de Belém.
