The Syrian Arab Army (SAA), backed by intense Russian air support, declared full control over the strategic town of Deir Hafer in eastern Aleppo province on Sunday morning. The capture marks a significant shift in the fragmented Syrian frontline, forcing US-backed Kurdish-led forces to execute a hasty retreat eastward and threatening the stability of the semi-autonomous region of Rojava.
Deir Hafer, located on a crucial highway junction connecting Aleppo city to the Euphrates River valley, has long been a contested prize. Its fall to Damascus forces dismantles a key defensive line for the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and opens a corridor for the SAA to push further towards the resource-rich territories currently held by Kurdish administration.

Military sources on the ground report that the advance was preceded by 72 hours of relentless bombardment by the Russian Aerospace Forces. Utilizing “dumb bombs” and cluster munitions, the airstrikes reportedly flattened SDF fortifications on the western outskirts of the town.
The Syrian Ministry of Defense issued a statement praising the “heroic operations” that “cleansed the town from separatist terrorists.” The statement broadcast on state media showed soldiers raising the two-star Syrian flag over the town’s main municipal building.

The retreat has triggered a fresh wave of displacement. The Rojava Information Center estimates that over 15,000 civilians fled Deir Hafer and surrounding villages in the last 48 hours, heading towards the already overcrowded camps near Manbij and Raqqa. Aid agencies are sounding the alarm, warning that winter conditions and a lack of international funding are creating a catastrophe.

The most significant aspect of the weekend’s developments may be what did not happen: a response from the United States. The SDF has been America’s primary partner in the fight against ISIS, and roughly 800 US troops remain in northeastern Syria.
In previous years, such a brazen advance by Assad’s forces onto SDF territory would have triggered US shows of force, such as flyovers by fighter jets or warning strikes. However, the Pentagon has remained notably silent since Friday.
This silence is fueling deep anxiety among the Kurdish leadership that the Trump administration may be preparing to withdraw the remaining US presence, effectively greenlighting a Turkish or Syrian government takeover of the northeast. Turkish President Erdoğan has already renewed threats of a cross-border operation to “finish the job” against Kurdish militants.
As the Syrian Army digs into its new positions in Deir Hafer, the fragile status quo that has defined northern Syria for years appears to be crumbling, leaving the Kurdish population facing an existential threat caught between Damascus, Ankara, and an indifferent Washington.
